Having a smelly dishwasher after every wash cycle is extremely frustrating. It’s also an indication that something is wrong. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone. Almost every homeowner experience having a stinky dishwasher.

Lucky for you, the team of professional appliance repairs Milwaukee WI technicians can help you with this issue.

Reasons for Smelly Dishwasher

Busy homeowners count on their dishwashers as an efficient and convenient substitute for handwashing. However, they need regular maintenance, care, and cleaning, just like any other appliances in the house. This will help avoid repairs, leakage, improve their lifespan, and run at optimum performance.

Usually, the smell inside the dishwasher is caused by the buildup of food particles or grease that might become trapped within the spray arm, drain hose, filters, and other hard to reach and tight areas. These buildups will start to release a fishy or funky smell over time. Of course, if you neglect this, the smell can make its way onto your dishware. Furthermore, mildew and bacteria might start to grow.

You might have a kinked hose or a clogged drain if the dishwasher smells in a damp or musty way. You might need the help of an expert for repairs. Problems like this might lead to water leakage or further damage.

How to Clean a Stinky Dishwasher?

If your dishwasher is smelly, don’t worry. You can still fix it. You can easily get rid of the odor, whether your dishwasher smell is caused by disrepair, neglect, or collection of debris. Here are several tips that you can follow:

  • Cleaning the Drain and the Filters

First, you’ve got to get rid of the lower dishwasher rack and place it somewhere safe. Next, you’ll have to clean the drain filter or the screen. Usually, you can find them at the lower part of the appliance. Remove the filter carefully and soak it in warm water for a couple of minutes. After that, you can then scrub it using a soft-bristled brush. Also, don’t forget to get rid of food particles from the drain’s interior.

  • Cleaning the Machine

The next thing you’ll going to do is to get rid of the upper dishwasher rack and clean the dishwasher’s shelves and interior walls using a simple mixture of water, dish soap, and baking soda. After scrubbing, rinse it with a damp and clean cloth.

  • Cleaning the Spray Arms

Get rid of the lower and upper spray arms and utilize a cotton swab or thin wire to properly get rid of any clogged debris in the holes. Rinse every unit in the sink. You’ve got to ensure every hole is clear.

  • Running the Dishwasher

You can use white vinegar in cleaning the dishwasher. You can pour 1 cup of it into a safe container. Then, place the container inside the dishwasher. Make sure you place it on the top rack. Then, turn the dishwasher on and run a short cycle. After the cycle, you can rinse the dishwasher using baking soda.
